Dave Ramsey: Put Your Dreams to Work to Build Wealth

I’ve been setting goals since I was a kid—it wasn’t an
option at our house. My parents would make me
sit down and write out what I wanted to achieve
in different areas of my life. Throughout the
years, I’ve discovered that the people who win in
life always have goals. I’ve met many millionaires, even
billionaires, and I’ve seldom spoken with any who got to
where they are without setting goals. Without goals, it’s
hard to know what you’re aiming at.

All goals begin with a dream. Now it’s good to have a dream,
but I meet a lot of people who have been praying about their
dream for 20 years and have done nothing about it. Everybody
has a great idea. But people who put their great ideas to work
are the ones who end up being millionaires.

The next step for your dream is to take it from the dream
stage, which is a generalized overall concept, down to a vision.
Next, to determine where the finish line is, break your vision
down into specific goals.

For your vision and goals to have long-term positive impact,
they must include several areas of your life. You must have
career goals, financial goals, spiritual goals, physical goals,
intellectual goals, family goals and social goals. If you leave one
of these areas out, you have what’s known as a fl at tire. Your life
will be out of balance and the ride won’t be as smooth.

In order for your goals to work, they must:

Be Specific. If you are going to win, your goals have to
be specific. Do not have general concepts. Break everything
down and get defined. It’s not specific enough if
you can’t tell it occurred.

Be Measurable. It’s easy to set measurable and quantifiable
goals in areas like sales. Things that are more cultural
in your life, where you’re shifting philosophy in your
career or family, are a little harder to measure, but there
are ways. Create a baseline and develop a process to measure
where you are now and where you are going from there.

Be Yours. We are forever, in our culture, letting someone
else set our goals. You cannot let someone else set
your goals for you. The goals have to be your goals—
not your boss’s, not your spouse’s and not the
person who came before you. They’re yours and you
have to have ownership in them or you won’t execute
them. There is no energy in other people’s goals. There is only
energy in what is inside of you.

Have a Time Limit. How much time do you have to
make it happen? If you don’t set a time limit, you will
not push yourself. When you have a time limit you
stay focused and on track.

Be in Writing. When you write these things down,
they’re dangerous. A written goal is much more
powerful than a goal you simply set in your head
and don’t write down to hold yourself accountable.
So, be careful what you write down because there
is a good chance it will happen.

Don’t get discouraged if your goals aren’t accomplished in the
exact way and down to the second according to your original
plan. Be sure to talk with those around you who have achieved
great goals they set for themselves. Find out what they did to
overcome their intimidating obstacles and what they learned
throughout the process. Some flexibility is definitely needed,
but as long as you are focused on the end goal and are taking
proactive steps toward accomplishing it, you are an achiever
and on your way to great things.

Brother’s (Goal) Keeper

When New Jersey Nets CEO Brett Yormark needs to find ways to creatively market his NBA team, he doesn’t have to look in the mirror… though sometimes it may seem that way. Often, he calls his brother Michael, the other half of the only identical twins running professional sports franchises in the United States.

The two, among the most innovative minds in their industry, share the same grueling schedule, the same philosophy for success—and the same face.

Brett, who also serves as president/CEO of Brooklyn Sports Entertainment, and Michael, president of the Florida Panthers hockey franchise, have been capturing the industry’s attention for more than a decade. Named to “Forty Under 40” lists in several high-profile magazines, the Yormark brothers, at 44, are the youngest to hold their positions in their respective leagues.

Since joining the Nets in 2005, Brett has helped bring about a 15 percent increase in ticket sales and a stunning increase of nearly 200 percent in team sponsorships. He also managed a deal with the Barclays banking and financial services company that includes a 20-year strategic marketing partnership and naming rights to the Barclays Center under construction and slated to open in 2012. Additionally, he secured a dozen other major sponsors for the Barclays Center before the first shovel struck dirt.

Michael faced the particular challenge of warming South Florida residents to the idea of a hockey team when he joined the organization in 2003. After taking over in 2007, he helped launch the team’s BankAtlantic Center toward becoming the fourth-highest revenue-producing arena in the country and increased suite sales by more than $2.5 million per year. The Panthers’ fan base continues to expand each season, as does BAC’s entertainment offerings, which now include the Sinatra Theatre and several high-end dining venues.

To understand the brothers’ success, it’s important to consider their childhood. Growing up in northern New Jersey, they watched their mother aggressively pursue a career as an interior designer after their father left. “When she was presented with the set of circumstances that left her with the sole responsibility of taking care of Brett, my sister and myself, she stood up tall and said, ‘I’m going to do my best to provide them with a wonderful life,’ ” recalls Michael. “She just set a terrific example because working hard is one thing, but without that passion or desire, it doesn’t matter. I have an equation I think of all the time: Passion + Energy = Success. We’d see our mother on her feet for 12 or 13 hours a day—that teaches a lesson on how to be successful.”

Brett and Michael loved sports but their athletic ability didn’t match their passion. So, in Brett’s words, “We had to find a way to get our foot in the door without being on the field.” The person opening that door, it turns out, was their mother, who provided introductions through her own client connections. She introduced Brett to a member of the Nets’ management and Michael to a partial owner of the Yankees, and both boys landed jobs within the organizations.

Brett eventually moved from the Nets to NASCAR, where he served as vice president and oversaw the largest sports deal in American history—the $750 million naming rights with Nextel—before returning to the organization that had given him his start. Michael transitioned from baseball to hockey, and arranged a co-promotional marketing agreement between the Florida Panthers and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers pro soccer team.

Both Yormarks consider themselves fortunate to work for organizations whose owners give them freedom to explore new ideas and take risks.

Some of Michael’s ideas included enacting the “Good Time Guarantee,” which promised a full-price ticket refund to any fan who didn’t enjoy his or her experience at home games in January. Another idea was to use the BAC’s glass elevator shaft for advertising space for home-security company ADT. Another light-bulb moment capitalized on LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Miami Heat; playing off his “King James” nickname, the Panthers offered “Seats fit for a King” and used James’ old Cleveland jersey number and new Miami jersey number as the starting price-points for the BAC’s tiers of seating. “It was the most successful promotion we’d ever done,” he says. “Heat tickets by that point had sold out and casual sports fans were still thirsty to attach themselves to something—and we were the next best game in town.”

For his part, Brett explored opportunities outside his team’s facility, enacting “Fan Appreciation Night” on the New Jersey Turnpike, with the Nets paying for one hour’s worth of tolls at Exit 16W. He also created the Nets Chamber of Commerce, in which season ticket holders can network with the team’s corporate sponsors. He also implemented the Nets Employment Program, inviting unemployed fans to send their résumés into the team’s offices, which were then forwarded to the Nets’ 120 corporate sponsors. Free tickets went to the first 2,000 people sending in résumés. And the Nets scooped up two of the applicants to join their sales team.

Brett also signed Wrigley as the official sponsor of the team’s off-season—an unprecedented move. He reasoned that since athletes do most of their endorsement deals, appearances and training during the off-season, “attaching a sponsorship during all that activity just made a lot of sense.”

But how do the Yormarks come up with the unconventional ideas? “For me, it’s a 24/7 deal that is part of our work lives and what we do every day,” Brett says. “Most of my ideas come spontaneously when I’m working out, which I do early every morning. That’s when my mind is most clear and I’m not on the phone or fielding emails. I’ll write the ideas on my BlackBerry and send to myself immediately after my workout.”

Brett also knows good ideas can come from any source: “I encourage fans to write me with ideas. I also use Twitter as a vehicle to connect with them. And I dedicate hours each weekend to reading publications to look for interesting trends.”

There’s another secret weapon each brother keeps in his arsenal: his twin. “Competition is healthy,” Michael says. “To have two brothers—twins—that are living, in many respects, parallel lives, especially in a career perspective helps to continually raise the bar. When Brett is successful, I’m his biggest cheerleader. At the same time, though, it raises the bar for me. I recognize I’ve got to work hard, do more. I’m a very self-motivated person. My boss doesn’t need to motivate me; my staff doesn’t need to motivate me. It’s just in my DNA. Your passion is your motivation. But with Brett, he does motivate me to continue to achieve, to push, to do whatever it takes to be successful. Because I know that’s what he’s doing in his world every single day.”

Brett says he doesn’t view his brother as “competition,” but as “someone near to me who I respect and admire who provides me with those checks and balances to make sure I’m on the right path every day, to make sure I’m on the straight and narrow on the way to being successful.”

Tony Jeary: The Success Strategies

Do you ever ask yourself, “What is the real key to success?” or “What is the best yardstick to measure my success?” My answer to these two questions is this: Your success is determined by how fast you achieve results, and you measure your success by getting the right results. So, two things are involved in producing great success: speed and outcome.

I’ve studied the subject of accelerated growth and success for years; the work I do on behalf of my clients is focused on helping them grow their enterprises faster. Why is speed important? Well, business is a results contest, and that typically involves competition. In today’s world, the winner is usually whoever delivers their products better and faster. In other words, the winners consistently get the right results faster than their competition.

When I talk about getting the right results, I’m talking about the kind of results that are planned in advance and are achieved on purpose. This means the right results are outcomes that were foreseen as part of turning a vision into reality. Successful people, by this definition, know the outcomes they need in advance, and they also know how to make them happen. Successful people (and organizations) have three strategic distinctions about the way they go about their lives and their businesses that produce the right results faster.

1. They have clarity about what they want.

2. They know how to focus on doing the things that matter.

3. They know how to execute their plans and achieve their goals.

Let’s explore each of these three distinctions

Clarity

I have never believed that people are inherently lazy. I just think some people don’t have a vision that inspires them, and as a result they don’t have much they really want to do. They just appear to be lazy. I say this to point out that the issue of clarity goes to the heart of motivation and desire. If you don’t have clarity about what you really want, you will be less motivated than those who do have clarity about what they want. When you really want something, you can taste it, feel it and experience it all in your mind before you have even taken the first step toward getting it. What you really want becomes a powerful vision that pulls you forward and keeps you energized every step of the way.

When you and your team have what I call strategic clarity, you know what you want to achieve; you are able to put it in writing and be specific. You are also able to communicate the “why” of it to those you need to get behind it and work with you to execute the vision.

How clear are you about what you really want? My research and my experience with hundreds of top performers indicate that most people have less clarity than they think they have. As a result, they have difficulty pulling their teams together and frequently get the wrong results—slower.

Focus

There is another term I use called strategic IQ, which relates to the amount of time you invest in strategic thinking versus tactical thinking. All of us are involved in both types of thinking, but tactical thinking can easily overwhelm our strategic thought.

Tactical thinking concerns tasks and to-do lists. Strategic thinking is about planning and prioritizing within the context of your vision and primary goals. It’s very easy to get swamped by things that are actually huge distractions and steal our time away from things that really matter and have the power to move the results needle.

Strategic IQ helps you identify the specific activities you should spend most of your time on so you can accelerate your results. I call these kinds of tasks high-leverage activities (HLAs). When you know what your HLAs are and invest most of your time in those areas, you will become more focused on your goals. In my professional life, I have identified five HLAs, and when tasks are presented to me that fall outside this list, I avoid doing them. My five HLAs are:

• Things that will attract strong, qualified business opportunities.

• Things that deliver great value to my customers.

• Things that further clarify my direction and vision.

• Things that provide intellectual growth and wisdom.

• Things that nurture my Rolodex and enhance my ability to connect with others.

Do you know what your HLAs are? If you don’t, chances are you’re losing time daily to distractions, and that means you are not getting the right results faster.

Execution

Every business has at least one strategic plan in its file cabinet that never became a reality.

What is the biggest reason plans are never executed? By far the biggest culprit is a communication disconnect between those who conceive the vision and those who must turn it into reality. Invariably, when businesses conduct internal effectiveness surveys, the allegation of poor communication is usually one of the top three problems identified. To achieve the right results faster, leaders must continually cascade their vision down through the organization (small or large) so every team member understands and supports it. This is not an easy thing to do, which is why so many organizations struggle with it. Communication challenges are found in every nook and cranny of our lives, from meetings to email, from text to voicemail, and each challenge impacts execution.

Clarity, focus and execution are simple distinctions on the surface, but they are complex to achieve. The benefits of acquiring them, however, are undeniable. You will get the right results, faster!

Goal Setting

by Zig Ziglar

Studies tell us that only 3% of people in the USA set goals, and they are among the wealthiest people in the nation! Worldwide the percentage is probably lower. Why so low? There are several reasons, but the one that concerns us the most at Ziglar Training Systems is lack of know-how. When we ask people why they don’t set goals they often say, “I don’t know how.”

Isn’t that remarkable? We send children to school for 12 years in America before they graduate from high school. Many of them go on to trade schools, colleges and universities. We teach them many important disciplines including history, economics, literature, science, and so forth, but we miss one critically important skill: goal setting. We award them their degrees, pat them on their backs, and send them into the world full of wisdom, but ill-prepared, almost always, to design and pursue the lives they really want.

And all that’s required to change this deficiency is a single semester, even half a semester, devoted to teaching goal setting. It doesn’t seem likely that we’re going to change the American educational system any time soon, or the world’s educational system, but that’s not going to stop us from teaching you how to set goals.

The letters and phone calls that we receive at Ziglar Training Systems are social proof that our goal setting programs work. We know that goal setting will help you change your life for the better, it will help you get what you really want from life. And when you do, that’s reason for all of us to celebrate! So for the next several weeks we are going to help you set goals. Whether you’re already a goal setter, you used to set goals and quit, or you’ve never set goals, these lessons will help you build a better life. They’ll also help those you share them with, so don’t be shy about forwarding this information!

Lesson 1. Dream! Let your imagination run wild while you fill up a blank sheet of paper with everything you want to be, do or have. Many adults have lost their ability to dream and that’s unfortunate. By dreaming you instill hope for your future, and with hope there’s possibility. So your assignment this week is to dream. During this next week devote at least two private sessions to dreaming. We want you to create a Dream List filled with ideas. Your list should include at least 25 dreams about what you want to be, do or have.

Lesson 2. After you complete your list, wait 24 to 48 hours and read each item on your list and answer the question: Why? If you can’t verbalize in one sentence why you want to be, do or have this dream, then it’s not a dream and it won’ become a goal. Cross it off your list.

Lesson 3: Ask the following five questions of every dream on the Dream List you created last week.

1. Is it really MY goal?
2. Is it morally right and fair to everyone concerned?
3. Is it consistent with my other goals?
4. Can I emotionally commit myself to finish this goal?
5. Can I “see” myself reaching this goal?
6.
You must answer “yes” to all five questions for each goal, or cross that goal off your list.

Here are some points to ponder: Is it really MY goal or is it a goal someone else wants me to pursue? Is it the right thing to do? Will achieving this goal distract from achieving other goals? Goals are often difficult to achieve. Are you sure you can make the commitment to pursue this goal and see it through? If you can’t “see” yourself reaching this goal, you probably won’t.

Take time during this week to think about the questions above and answer them. Once you’re finished, your Dream List will probably be a bit shorter than when you started out. That’s okay because you’re now closer to identifying the goals that you really will pursue and can achieve.

Lesson 4:

Ask the following seven questions of every dream that remains on your Dream List (or goals list).

Will reaching this goal . . .
1. make me happier?
2. make me healthier?
3. make me more prosperous?
4. win me more friends?
5. give me peace of mind?
6. make me more secure?
7. improve my relationships with others?

If you can’t answer Yes to at least one of these questions for each goal, eliminate that goal from your list. Be sure to consider your family when you answer these questions. And do not confuse pleasure with happiness!

Here we go with Lesson 5:

After asking the questions posted in Lesson 4 you will have eliminated some of your goals. Actually, they were not goals, just thoughts or desires at this point, so you’re better off without them.

Separate your remaining list of goals into one of three categories: Short-range (one month or less to achieve this goal), Intermediate (one month to one year to achieve this goal), or Long-range (one year or more to achieve this goal).

This lesson will help you quickly determine whether or not you have a balanced perspective between what needs to be done now, versus your dreams for the future.

Remember: Some goals must be BIG to make you stretch and grow to your full potential. Some goals must be long-range to keep you on track and greatly reduce the possibility of short-range frustrations. Some goals must be small and daily to keep you disciplined. Some goals must be ongoing. Some goals (i.e., weight loss, sales success, education, etc.) may require analysis and consultation to determine where you are before you can set the goals. Most goals should be specific. A “nice home” is not as good as a “3,000 square-foot, Tudor- style home with four bedrooms, three full baths, and two living spaces.”

Here we go with the final lesson:

After tracking your first few goals on the General Goals Procedure Chart you are likely to have many additional goals that remain to be charted. Take time now to chart those goals. If you need a copy of the chart, send a blank email to editor@zigziglar.com?Subject=GoalsChart . The word GoalsChart (as written) must be on the Subject line of your email!

Be sure to work each goal through the process of the chart. Be selective. You may not be able to work on all of your goals at one time! Don,t over do it. If you only have time to complete one or two goals for the remainder of this year, don,t apologize. Do a little bit more than you can, but do not overextend your time to the point that you don,t complete any of your goals. Do not get frustrated by the process! Work the system and it will work for you. We can fill a book with the number of letters that Zig receives about the effectiveness of his simple goal-setting program. Trust the system.

Once you have charted your goals and plotted the activities that you intend to do to fulfill your goals, pat yourself on the back! You have just spent more time planning your future than most of your friends, relatives or associates will ever invest! Good for you.

Coaches, Do You Listen to Your Own Advice When It Comes to Setting Goals?

I’ve started an exercise regime many, many times and on occasions kept it up for a few months but time and time again something has stopped me. Maybe I just didn’t have time or catching the flu interrupted my plans and I just never got going again. Whatever the reason (excuse) I’ve just never been great at making time for exercise. Possibly because I’m relatively healthy and I’m not overweight so it’s just never seemed that important. But I’ve known for a long time that I’ve got to make exercise a consistent part of my lifestyle. I need to stay healthy, reduce stress and to stop my weight creeping up any more like it has been slowly for the past year or so.

Last night I discussed this with Barrie, my coach. Even though I’m a coach and know what to do to set goals etc. etc. knowing it and doing it aren’t always the same thing. We explored all of the things that get in the way of me exercising, all of the benefits of exercising and how I will feel after I’ve been for a walk and what I can do to help me achieve my goal.

So as planned this morning I went for a walk along the beach as soon as I’d taken my son to school. Before I got out of bed I could hear the wind howling so I really wasn’t looking forward to going out, but because I knew Barrie would be checking up on me I wrapped up warm and got on with it.

The beach was beautiful and I sat on a rock for a while just to take in the sounds of the crashing waves and the birds and to watch the sea and the dogs chasing each other and I felt alive, like I didn’t have a care in the world. Why on earth does exercise seem like such a chore sometimes when taking an hour out of my day for a simple walk along the beach can make me feel so good.

So that’s day one out of the way, now I need to keep it up so it becomes a part of my daily routine. The things I need to remember are:

  • Taking an hour out to exercise makes me feel better in the short term and will have long term benefits if I keep it up, and
  • I love walking along the beach so doing exercise that I enjoy regularly is much better than forcing myself to go for a run once in a blue moon.

I’m off now to write myself a little note and put it beside my bed to remind myself about both of these things so that tomorrow morning when the little devil on my shoulder is telling me to pull the covers over my head I’ll see the note and the little angel on the other shoulder will wake up to remind me that I’ll enjoy it (so long as I put my thermals on)

What do you need to start telling yourself to achieve your goals and how will you remind yourself what to tell yourself?

8 Tips To Finding A Business Coach Who Will Help You Meet Your Goals

There are various reasons for a businessperson to consider hiring a business coach, but the two most common reasons are because you’re starting a new business or expanding an existing one.

However to actually reach your goals with a coach, you have to first hire the right person. So, here are 8 tips for choosing the right business coach.

1. Compatibility is very important between you and the person you hire. You will be working with them in all your business deals and endeavors; so it is important you have a good rapport and communication with him or her. Moreover, they should either have a similar or better approach in reaching your goals. If your ideas, approaches and expectations differ, there is little chance of anything positive arising.

2. You have to choose a business coach who has the right experience and training in your field and goals. There’s no point in hiring a coach with experience in hotel management if you need help running a software development company.

3. Ask potential coaches for customer testimonials and references, so that you can get an idea of their capacity in helping a business grow and flourish. This is best done by speaking to a number of potential candidates before you finally decide on the best one to help you.

4. Speak to their present or past clients to find out how competent they are as coaches. Find out if their approach is effective, and helpful for your business.

5. Learn more about your coach’s background so that you get an idea about their methods and decide if they fit your needs. Find out what they can, and cannot do for you. Hiring a person that cannot do much for you is complete folly and a waste of time and money.

6. You will come across different types of business coaches while looking for one for your business. You have to find one that is open and accessible to you and your team if and when required. Coaches that are difficult to reach and who are too busy to concentrate on your business are not worth hiring. The person that you hire should be one who is dedicated to your team and will work hard at reaching your goals.

7. Make sure you are clear about your expectations while looking for and hiring your business coach. To do this, you have to be honest with your expectations and clearly state what you expect from them. Both you and your coach should come to an agreed expectation for a successful relationship to grow your business.

8. S/he should be adept at improving communication skills within your employees as you don’t want to end up pointing fingers at one another if any problems arise. Once you find a business coach who meets your expectations, and who can help you reach your desired goals, you will find a remarkable improvement in the running of your business.

Push Past Your Limits

Goals

When Hugh Jackman hit adolescence, his body rebelled. He grew 12 inches in one year, and as he told me, “I was this 14-year-old beanpole.” In a cricket match that year, the beanpole reached up for the ball, twisted, caught it… and passed out cold.

“I’d completely ripped out all the muscles at the base of my spine,” he says. “They’d been stretched to the tearing point because the bones had just gone crazy growing. They simply grew too fast for the muscles to keep up.”

It took two years of hard work and rehab for Jackman, now 6 foot 3 inches, to feel strong again. He’s been dedicated to core conditioning ever since, especially given the physical roles he’s taken on for film and Broadway. The experience also brought something to life in Jackman: a pursuit of challenge.

“Testing yourself is the only way you find out what you can really do,” he says. This mindset helped him eventually bench press more than 300 pounds and leg press 1,000 during his training to play Wolverine in the X-Men films (The Wolverine is scheduled for release in 2012).

Jackman says his internal drive is not about goals, per se. “In this country, people are all about setting goals. And I concede, to a point, how it can help you get going,” he explained to Men’s Healthmagazine. “But we limit ourselves with goals. We have far more ability than we give ourselves credit for. How can you maximize the use of your mind? You see that in people under pressure. How does someone run a 100-meter race at the Olympics? When it’s once every four years, with everything they’ve done leading to that? It can’t just be adrenaline. Maybe it’s just the mind getting out of the way.”

Your Own Greatest Enemy Champion

How to Move Beyond Your Limiting Beliefs

Don’t let your mind stand between you and success. Try this simple, four-step process, recommended by Jack Canfield in The Success Principles, to transform limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs.

  • Identify the limiting belief that you want to change. What beliefs are keeping you from achieving the success you desire?
  • Determine how the belief is limiting you.
  • Decide how you want to be, act or feel.
  • Create a turnaround statement that affirms or gives you permission to be, act or feel this new way.

Once you’ve created a turnaround statement, repeat it several times a day for at least 30 days. Combine your new belief with positive action and get the results you really want.

Jim Rohn on Personal Development

Jim Rohn – Personal Development

Jim Rohn Books And Infinite Life Lessons Jim Rohn’s death was felt throughout the world in December of 2009. Having traveled the world for decades, he was truly a world-renowned figure and inspiration to millions of people from every walk of life.

If you haven’t heard Jim Rohn speak I can only say you’re missing out. Unfortunately, I never was able to sit in on one of his seminars before Jim Rohn died. But, I have, and you have access to his years of labor, wisdom, motivation, and inspiration through his various recorded teachings. I know his self improvement resources have served me well in my brief personal development journey.

Who is Jim Rohn? Simply put, Jim Rohn is known for his ability to communicate to others the lessons he has learned through life and from his rags to riches story. He pretty much describes himself as a loser when he was in his early twenties, and it disgusted him. He minces no words when he says he was living well within his potential. I believe most people today do just this. But the inspirational Jim Rohn started in network marketing with his mentor Earl Shoaff and he was never the same. Shoaff taught him about life, philosophy, work, business, and how to think. In short, he catapulted Rohn onto the high road of life change.

Lessons on Life from Earl Shoaff and Jim Rohn And life change is exactly what Jim Rohn teaches about. He covers it all really, and he calls it the “five major pieces to the life puzzle,” which also happens to be the title of one of his books. Perhaps the most striking message Jim Rohn can impress upon us are his ideas on personal philosophy. He calls our philosophy the “set of the sail,” and life is simply the wind. We all have control of our own sails, but not the wind. Yet, the same wind blows on all of us.

Now, I’ve studied quite a bit of philosophy and psychology, but my Jim Rohn books taught me far more about how to actually live a better, happier life in a much more concise form than any other text I can think of. To put it bluntly, Jim Rohn changed my life in some incredible ways.

I believe we can all learn a lot from studying Jim Rohn. Even though I have listened to his audio CD’s, watched a few of his DVD’s, and read a ton of material about Jim Rohn, I still learn from him. One particular Jim Rohn video I have I have watched and taken notes numerous times, but still if I turned it on right now I am confident I could pick up a new lesson or insight. In basic terms, Jim Rohn rose to and lived the successful life that many of us dream about; and he’s gone on to teach others how to do it. All of this is only part of the reason they call him the mentor of mentors.

Allowing Emotions To Fuel Your Desire by Jim Rohn

Emotions are the most powerful forces inside us. Under the power of emotions, human beings can perform the most heroic (as well as barbaric) acts. To a great degree, civilization itself can be defined as the intelligent channeling of human emotion. Emotions are fuel and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship of civilized progress.

Which emotions cause people to act? There are four basic ones; each, or a combination of several, can trigger the most incredible activity. The day that you allow these emotions to fuel your desire is the day you’ll turn your life around.

1) DISGUST

One does not usually equate the word “disgust” with positive action. And yet, properly channeled, disgust can change a person’s life. The person who feels disgusted has reached a point of no return. He or she is ready to throw down the gauntlet at life and say, “I’ve had it!” That’s what I said after many humiliating experiences at age 25. I said, “I don’t want to live like this anymore. I’ve had it with being broke. I’ve had it with being embarrassed, and I’ve had it with lying.”

Yes, productive feelings of disgust come when a person says, “Enough is enough.”

The “guy” has finally had it with mediocrity. He’s had it with those awful sick feelings of fear, pain and humiliation. He then decides he is “not going to live like this anymore.” Look out! This could be the day that turns a life around. Call it what you will, the “I’ve had it” day, the “never again” day, the “enough’s enough” day. Whatever you call it, it’s powerful! There is nothing so life-changing as gut-wrenching disgust!

2) DECISION

Most of us need to be pushed to the wall to make decisions. And once we reach this point, we have to deal with the conflicting emotions that come with making them. We have reached a fork in the road. Now this fork can be a two-pronged, three-pronged, or even a four-pronged fork. No wonder decision-making can create knots in stomachs, keep us awake in the middle of the night, or make us break out in a cold sweat.

Making life-changing decisions can be likened to internal civil war. Conflicting armies of emotions, each with its own arsenal of reasons, battle each other for supremacy of our minds. And our resulting decisions, whether bold or timid, well-thought-out or impulsive, can either set the course of action or blind it. I don’t have much advice to give you about decision-making except this:

Whatever you do, don’t camp at the fork in the road. Decide. It’s far better to make a wrong decision than to not make one at all. Each of us must confront our emotional turmoil and sort out our feelings.

3) DESIRE

How does one gain desire? I don’t think I can answer this directly because there are many ways. But I do know two things about desire:

a. It comes from the inside, not the outside.
b. It can be triggered by outside forces.

Almost anything can trigger desire. It’s a matter of timing as much as preparation. It might be a song that tugs at the heart. It might be a memorable sermon. It might be a movie, a conversation with a friend, a confrontation with the enemy, or a bitter experience. Even a book or an article such as this one can trigger the inner mechanism that will make some people say, “I want it now!”

Therefore, while searching for your “hot button” of pure, raw desire, welcome into your life each positive experience. Don’t erect a wall to protect you from experiencing life. The same wall that keeps out your disappointment also keeps out the sunlight of enriching experiences. So let life touch you. The next touch could be the one that turns your life around.

4) RESOLVE

Resolve says, “I will.” These two words are among the most potent in the English language. I WILL. Benjamin Disraeli, the great British statesman, once said, “Nothing can resist a human will that will stake even its existence on the extent of its purpose.” In other words, when someone resolves to “do or die,” nothing can stop him.

The mountain climber says, “I will climb the mountain. They’ve told me it’s too high, it’s too far, it’s too steep, it’s too rocky, it’s too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it. You’ll soon see me waving from the top or you’ll never see me, because unless I reach the peak, I’m not coming back.” Who can argue with such resolve?

When confronted with such iron-willed determination, I can see Time, Fate and Circumstance calling a hasty conference and deciding, “We might as well let him have his dream. He’s said he’s going to get there or die trying.”

The best definition for “resolve” I’ve ever heard came from a schoolgirl in Foster City, California. As is my custom, I was lecturing about success to a group of bright kids at a junior high school. I asked, “Who can tell me what ‘resolve’ means?” Several hands went up, and I did get some pretty good definitions. But the last was the best. A shy girl from the back of the room got up and said with quiet intensity, “I think resolve means promising yourself you will never give up.” That’s it! That’s the best definition I’ve ever heard: PROMISE YOURSELF YOU’LL NEVER GIVE UP.

Think about it! How long should a baby try to learn how to walk? How long would you give the average baby before you say, “That’s it, you’ve had your chance”? You say that’s crazy? Of course it is. Any mother would say, “My baby is going to keep trying until he learns how to walk!” No wonder everyone walks.

There is a vital lesson in this. Ask yourself, “How long am I going to work to make my dreams come true?” I suggest you answer, “As long as it takes.” That’s what these four emotions are all about.
