What Is Unique About Life Coaching?

Life Coaching

We will try to answer the question of “What is life coaching?” by looking at what is unique about it.

Life coaching is a discipline that is mostly confused with mentoring, and sometimes people mix it up with counseling. Furthermore, as the origins of life coaching is based on business coaching, sometimes people mix it up with consulting.

What differentiates life coaching and makes it unique among the other disciplines that seem to be similar to it, is the fact that it is a futuristic discipline with a hands off technique that leaves identifying the problem and finding the solution totally in the hands of the client.

So here to answer the basic question of what is life coaching, we can say that a coach helps a person through questions and without any advise to identify the objective and how to reach there. Therefore, all the answers come from the client and only questions come from those who practice life coaching.

It is the answer to what is life coaching that shows us what is so unique about this discipline, and what differentiates it from the other seemingly similar disciplines.

It is very important to note here that in this article we are not trying to show which discipline is right and which is wrong. Also we are not trying to show which one is better than the other. Each discipline has its advantages and different techniques to help the client.

Mentoring for example, is a discipline where the mentor is an expert in an area and shows the mentee how to go about it. The coach does not have to be an expert in any area. The coach needs only to be an expert in asking questions that would help the client find his/her way.

In consultancy, the consultant is given a problem or a case to solve, and then he/she comes back to the client with possible solutions for the client to implement. This is way off the life coaching process which involves working in partnership with the client to support him/her to find different options and find the best option to start the implementation process with.

Counseling, in many cases looks back to study the roots of a problem while life coaching helps the client transform the problem into a positive future objective to reach without going back into the sources of the issue. It helps the client realize immediately what he/she wants to achieve from the case presented or the issue at hand.

What is life coaching? It is a discipline that helps a person looking forward, transforming problems and challenges into positive objectives through asking questions that will eventually help the client identify the objective, identify the different options to reach the objective and finally choosing the best option to start the implementation process.

What is so unique about life coaching is that various disciplines started copying and using its techniques which added to the general confusion between those different disciplines

We hope we have been able to answer the long-standing question of what is life coaching in a way that shed light on new angles.
